Who we are
Hello! My name is Francis Emmanuel Kofi Osei, a 4th-year medical student at the University of Ghana
Medical School. Beyond medicine, I have two deep loves: physics and philosophy. Out of these passions, I
created the φx Foundation — a space dedicated to teaching, learning, and exploring physics in an
engaging way.
It started with me playfully throwing around big physics terms to make my friends laugh (and maybe annoy
them a little 😅). Eventually, I was invited to help teach some friends preparing for the
GEMP entrance exams. They all passed — and their feedback convinced me that I could actually teach and make a
difference.
Now, instead of wasting my energy on people uninterested in physics, I want to focus on those who love
learning, struggle but want to improve, or simply need guidance. I’m also working toward an academic
career in physics research — but teaching is something I genuinely enjoy and want to grow in.
Why we exist
The φx Foundation was born out of two big goals:
- To Teach Physics Better
- Using slides, stories, humor, and interactive tools like PhET simulations
- Showing students not only what to learn but also how to learn and how to answer exam questions.
- To Support the Bigger Dream of Quality Education
- Inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education).
- Helping struggling students find their feet, because I know from experience how failure feels — and
how to rise again.
I grew up fascinated by giants like
Roger Penrose, Brian Greene, Carlo Rovelli, and even visionaries like
Elon Musk. Their ideas shaped me, and now I want to share that same inspiration with others.
Our Future
This foundation is only the beginning. Here’s where I see it going:
- Expanding to other subjects (most likely Mathematics alongside Physics).
- Building a network of passionate volunteers who love teaching.
- Creating a platform where students don’t just study for exams but actually fall in love with science.
Eventually, I hope to grow beyond the foundation and establish a dedicated
Institute for Theoretical
Physics — one that nurtures students from undergraduate all the way to PhD, just like a medical
programme. But that’s a longer-term dream. For now, we start here — at the foundation level.
The Name φx
The name combines two ideas:
- φ (phi): from the phonetics of “physics” (phy → phi).
- x: inspired by writing “phizx” → “phix.”
So it’s pronounced
phi-ex (but hey, feel free to say it however you like 😉).
How to Join
Joining the foundation is simple:
- Choose a subject you’re passionate about teaching (for now, physics is our main focus).
- Find learners to teach.
- Report your activities to the head (me!) so we stay aligned with the foundation’s goals.
👉 Teaching is
voluntary and free. Any money charged does not represent the foundation.
This is your chance to grow with us early! As we expand, joining may involve interviews and more formal
steps. But right now, you can simply start, learn, and grow with the project.
Final Word
The φx Foundation is more than just about passing exams — it’s about building better thinkers, better
learners, and better people. If you’re curious, passionate, and willing to learn or teach, then you belong
here.
Welcome to the φx Foundation. 🥲
